Welcome to Raven’s Hollow – Where Happy Chickens Make People Happy

Hi! My name is Kypris and I breed Chickens for fun and to improve the breeds. Years ago I earned a Master’s Degree in Biology with an emphasis on genetics, but in the corporate world of work I was never able to specifically use my knowledge of genetics for  animal and plant breeding. Now it’s a passion!

In the afternoons I work as a therapist and live on the top of a mountain in Southern California. In my off time I’ve finally found a very satisfying way to put my knowledge of genetics to good use — I raise chickens and grow heirloom vegetables and flowers.

Ravens Hollow Farms raises pampered chickens for pets and homesteading with the goal to create healthy, friendly birds that conform to breed standards, even tho we do not show birds ourselves.  We use regenerative, organic methods to grow our own food and ethically raise chickens for pets, eggs, and meat. We both hand raise our babies and use broody hens. Our two flocks are free to roam the yard for several hours a day and eat lots of bugs, grass, and homegrown herbs and veggies in addition to their regular balanced chicken food.

2025 marks our 5th generation of breeding Isabel and Crele Cuckoo Orpingtons. We are taking a break from breeding in 2025 and do not have Ameraucanas available for sale this year. Contact us if you are interested in fertile hatching eggs or custom hatches for 2025.

We are located in Julian, California, northeast of San Diego. Hens can be picked up by appointment in Julian or Escondido, CA. SCROLL DOWN TO EMAIL US.

AVAILABLE YOUNG LAYING HENS

“Rainbow” Orpington hens
These are purebred Orpingtons that originated from a cross between Buff and Isabel Orpington parents and have very friendly temperaments and good health. Scroll to the bottom for a fun video of our Mama hen, Frankie and her antics.

Ginger (6 months, “Rainbow”  Orpington young laying hen) – $40 (born July 2024)

Ginger is the daughter of our delightful Buff Orpington hen Frankie. She has the same calm temperament, but has gorgeous barred chestnut feathering with a dark ruff. She is friendly and promises to be a good layer.

Crele and Isabel Orpington Hens ( The Crele and Isabel Orpington colors are still very rare in the US! “Cuckoo” refers to a pattern of barring in their feathers. Click over to my Orpingtons page to see photos of the parents.)

Julie (8 months, Unbarred Crele Orpington hen with lacing) – $60 (born July 2024)

Julie was raised by our broody hen Iris, but is still very friendly and laying beautiful brown eggs. She has gorgeous dark chestnut feathering with black lacing on the front. She promises to be a good layer and may even go broody for you if you are interested in raising chicks.

Rosie (8 months, Isabel Cuckoo Orpington young laying hen) – $60 (born July 2024)

Rosie was raised by a broody hen outdoors but is our friendliest Isabel hen of the 2024 hatch. She likes to stand on your foot and follow you around, especially if you have treats. She is is a tiny bit smaller than her sisters, but makes up for it with her winning personality. A wonderful choice for someone who wants a hen to cuddle and pet. She lays light brown eggs.

Double Blue (8 months, Isabel Cuckoo Orpington young laying hen) – $60 (born July 2024)

Double Blue was raised by our broody hen Bobbie, and is not hard to handle, but a little stand-offish. However she is one of our most gorgeous hens of the year, showing off not only clear barring and perfect English Orpington body shape, but also an extremely good layer. With her pale Gold and Silver coloring she looks like a beautiful watercolor painting in the yard. We call her Double Blue because that was her temporary identification as a chick. Now she is ready for a permanent name and a forever home!

Purple (8 months, Isabel Cuckoo Orpington young laying hen) – $60 (born July 2024)

Purple is Double Blue’s Hatchmate and sister. She has the same gorgeous coloring and conformation. She and Double Blue are best friends, and would do well going to the same home together as they are bonded. Like her sister, she lays speckled brown eggs and has a lot of gorgeous gold in her coloring, She is also ready for her forever home and a permanent name.

SOLD – Amos (Roo) – $50 (born 2023)

Amos is a one-year-old rooster with GREAT fertility who has given us some beautiful babies and managed his own small flock of ladies. He is adept at recognizing predators and getting his girls to safety. He is gentle if a little shy. Here you see him sporting a diaper indoors on “pedicure day”. We trim all our rooster’s spurs once a month and spend some time socializing with them so that they trust us. He is ready for his forever home as he produced two gorgeous Isabel Cuckoo pullets that we will be using to create our next generation.

Drummer in a diaper

SOLD – Drummer (Hen)- $50 (born 2023). Drummer is an adorab
le hen who gave us some beautiful babies this year. Drummer is Amos’ sister from the same 2023 clutch (Alex x Degas) and was a good layer for us this year with a decent temperament. She did not go broody this year, and kept on laying while half of our other hens wanted to sit on eggs!  Drummer does well in a mixed flock and is neither a bossy or submissive hen, but sits in the middle of the pecking order.

SOLD – Alex (Hen) – $50 – (born 2022) Alex is our OG Crele Hen. She is the mother of Amos and Drummer’s and is a VERY LARGE Orpington. She has produced many fine babies for us and is ready to go to her new forever home as a good layer and pet chicken. We are keeping her son from 2024 (“Manet“)  as a breeding rooster for next year. She lays a light brown egg that sometimes has speckles on it. She still has many egg laying years ahead of her, since Orpingtons generally continue to lay for 6-8 years.

Alex was hatched from a fertile egg shipped from North Carolina’s Greenlands Farms 2 years ago and unfortunately was the only surviving chick of that clutch. She was raised as a singleton in the house for 4 months, but is still a little shy with humans. However, she loves her treats, steel cut oats in particular! She is an enormous chicken and is so fluffy that we trim her fanny feathers in the spring to facilitate mating and to prevent poopy butt. She has gorgeous orange-russet-gold color and will continue to lay for many years. She will sit in your lap and settle but will not come to you on her own unless you have treats! She gets along well in a mixed flock.

Please enjoy this video of our adorable “Rainbow Orpington” Mama hen “Frankie”. Frankie is a hen from a cross between “Ivy” an American Buff Orpington, and “Rising Moon”, an Isabel Cuckoo Orpington Roo. We have a one young hen available from her for 2025.
